You don't even HAVE to use the dressspheres except for the tutorial, although I would recommend using them, especially if you like to 100% your games. The three women are still powerful, tough, and the battle system is super fun to use. They can be feminine, but again, that just isn't a bad thing. Plus, the designs of each outfit are really, really cool. I don't see why this should be a bad thing.
"Fashion? In combat?" Yes! Think about it, you're changing from different outfits so that they can fit according to your offense or defense. Part of the combat system is "dressphere shift" where your three playable characters can shift between their outfits in order to use the different abilities and powers. Firstly, "girly" isn't a bad thing, I think the reason why people say that is because the main character is a girl, and the 2 lead supporting characters are also girls. Many people agree that X is a great game however, there's people who say that X-2 isn't great, that it's too "girly", etc. They were part of my childhood, and even now I still love them and replay them quite often.
